Here's a blast from past. Twenty-one years ago Ron and I spent the holiday in Washington, D.C. and watched a spectacular fireworks display over the Washington Monument. Keep in mind how old these photos are and that I am just an amateur photographer.
It's pretty much the same every year. The crowd starts to assemble very early in the evening, not just to get a good spot, but also for the live entertainment.
I think I zoomed in to show the American flags surrounding the Washington Monument.
I took about six photos of the fireworks display and these turned out the best.
Although you wouldn't know it by my old photos, this was by far the most spectacular fireworks display that I had ever seen. Of course, I didn't want to miss much of the show by looking through a camera lens, so I didn't take very many pictures.
Back then the Washington Monument wasn't illuminated during the fireworks like it is today. I'm sure the Internet is filled with much better photos, such as this beautiful picture.
Washington, D.C. is one of my favorite cities, and I have been there many times. I can't think of a better place to spend the fourth of July.

Nice photos. And I noticed you are up to 60 followers. Wow!
@Rae, thanks...glad you like the photos. Yes, the number of my followers are growing like weeds! I love it. I'm following most of them too!
Coming your way from Judy over at Can You Imagine. I enjoyed reading a few of your posts and looking at the photos. I have always loved the beauty of our Country's Capitol. I visited there a number of times in recent years and will be there for a reunion of my husbands Midshipmens graduating class in October.
@Maria, hello & welcome! Thanks for stopping by with such a nice comment. Isn't D.C. great! I wonder if I will ever get to see all the sites there...so many any so little time (and long lines). I have a lot of recent pics of Washington & places and one of these days will get a flickr or picassa set up to show. Thanks again! Have fun in Washington this Fall, and if you haven't been to the Holocaust Museum, I hope you will go. It is so worth it!
Now, now, now . . .you are just being modest. Those photos are spectacular, especially considering their age. All my fireworks shots end up being a pin of light on a black background. lol
Happy Independence Day!
Please stop by and read The Meaning of Freedom when you get a chance. It's sure to touch your heart. :o)
Angela
@Mom's Fortress of Solitude, Thanks so much for complimenting those pictures...I do think I used a slower speed film, but I sure didn't know what I was doing. Thank God for digital now.
Happy 4th of July to you & your family too.
I always enjoy your blog, so will visit in a few.
John, I watched "A Capitol Fourth" tonight on PBS and it looked just like your photos! We were in DC about 4-5 years ago on the 4th and saw the fireworks from the middle of a bridge. It was spectacular!
@kenju, I never thought to watch that! I bet they had the National Symphony too just like, when I was there. I'm glad to hear my pictures seemed to have really captured the moment! I never like being that close though. I can imagine your view from the bridge was spectacular indeed! And hopefully you got to avoid the metro afterwards OMG.
As always, thanks for the comment.
Really beautiful. And I know what you mean about not wanting to miss everything by constantly taking pics. Some people take lots of photos and then only get to see the stuff thru the pics only.I usually say "You take the pics, you take such beautiful pictures" and I get away with it(lol)
Yvette, you are so clever! Thanks for the kind words.
John these are great, and 20 years ago, there were no digital cameras, LOL. Have a great week!
@Rebecca, thanks! I'm glad you think they are great! Thanks for stopping by and commenting!
I've traveled quite a bit but have never been to D.C. All my kids have been there on school trips but they didn't want mom to chaperon. I wonder why? ;-)
@Mary Ellen, I can't imagine why the kids never wanted you to chaperone! You're never to old to visit D.C.
Great old pics there. It was the mid 60's last time I was in D.C. Now it's time I should introduce thegrandson to our Capitol.
@themom, thank you! I agree you should take the grandson! So mnany historical and free sites, you can't go wrong there.
