President Obama's speech to students

The text of the President's speech to students is now posted on the White House website, so all those people that got their panties in a wad can go read it, calm down, and send their kids to school tomorrow.

In summary, the President will be emphasizing the importance of education and that you should study hard and stay in school. If this speech can keep just one student from dropping out of school, I think it will be well worth it.

What an exciting day it will be for our school age children to know that the President cares about them and is going to talk directly to them!

I'm so tired of Obama acting like he's our leader or something. Just who does he think he is?!!

And now he's trying to be our children's leader too? Trying to tell them to worker harder and have some personal discipline! The nerve!

Why are the craziest people also the most outspoken. Sometimes I just want to stab them in the eye with a fork (please note this outspoken comment does not in any way suggest that I am crazy). :)

As a Canadian watching this from across the border, it completely puzzled me as to why anyone was upset about the President's speech to the school children. Are people just looking for things to be upset about? It boggles the mind.

Tell Jo there are lots of crazies down here in the US.

I'm so excited for the kids in school today. It isn't too often that a sitting president chooses to do something like this. I'm hoping his message about education can provide them with a little more hope and a better understanding about how important their schooling is. As John said if it provides a better future for just one child it was worth all the trouble.

@Larry Ohio, LOL You win best comment of the day award! Thanks, Larry!

@Andrew, that is a really good question! Probably anytime the attention is not on the craziest people, it makes them more outspoken.

@Jo, Exactly! It's not the first time a President has done this. I think you might be on to something-- some people ARE just looking for things to be upset about (and they are usually Republicans, or Democrats if a Republican is in office)!

Oh, and Jo, kenju said to tell you there are lots of crazies down here in the U.S. Of course, you know that.

@kenju, LOL I don't think I ever got a comment like that, but thanks! Oh, and it's done! I just hope Jo subscribes to the comments!

@Kyle, Thank you for sharing your thoughts on the President's speech to students. I really do think it will leave a lasting impression on some kids, who might otherwise end up dropping out.

Thanks for posting this I didn't realize that he was going to give a speech to our kids. I need to slow down! Anyway, I sat down with my son and went over
some of the speech. I actually enjoy the fact that he respects the children enough to take the time to speak to them. Thanks again.

Actually, I need to correct you, John. The President wasn't addressing the school children, they were addressing the nation’s schoochildren.

Time for a spelling czar.

I do have to agree with you, I think it's silly to get angry over this. However, Dick Gephart (House Majority Leader at the time) didn't seem to think so when Bush was giving an address to the school children. He said,
“The Department of Education should not be producing paid political advertising for the president, it should be helping us to produce smarter students.”

Also...

Rep. Patricia Schroeder (D-Colo.), chairwoman of the Select Committee on Children, Youth and Families, said it was outrageous for the White House to “start using precious dollars for campaigns” when “we are struggling for every silly dime we can get” for education programs.

Rep. Martin Frost (D-Tex.) said that if Bush feels obliged to use government funds to hire outside consultants “to make him look good,” then he should fire some of the public relations experts on the White House payroll. “Then the president might be more sympathetic to unemployment benefits,” Frost said, referring to Bush’s threat to veto legislation to extend benefits.

What it all boils down to is politics as usual...which is why I don't support either party. They're all a bunch of hypocrites.

I don't have any kids in the public school system anymore, and if I did I wouldn't let them stay home to avoid the talk. I may not like Obama, but I doubt if his speech would have made an impact on them either way. I suspect they would have slept through the whole thing, just like they did when Bush gave his talk.

When all was said and done John, the President's speech was fine and no one turned into an Obama "zombie"... Olbermann on Countdown ran a hilarious segment on the whole thing and how FOOLISH the talking heads on the right looked while spewing their venom at the same time showing clips of the speech.
Go Obama Go...

I don't see what the BIG deal was either. These people are just looking for things to complain about. Trying to stir controversy. Get over it!

I live in Indianapolis, Indiana and some older students at a school (somewhere in the city) decided to protest the fact that their school administrators decided Not to show the speech. As I read about this story on a local television website, I was stunned by the negative (and somewhat hateful) comments people made regarding our President. What bothers me about the whole thing is that whether you support the President or not, doesn't he deserve our respect as our elected leader?
