Teacher suspended over 'gay animal' article

Can you believe a local teacher has been suspended after reports that he had students in his classes read an article about homosexuality in the animal kingdom. The teacher is said to have allowed students to read the article "The Gay Animal Kingdom" from the June issue of Seed Magazine, a science and culture publication.

(Click the title link for the newspaper article).

I read the article and I can't understand what all the fuss is about. I certainly don't think it warrants a teacher being suspended! What do you think? If you read the link to the Jacksonville newspaper article, be sure and read the readers comments at the bottom (always very informative and thought provoking).

Being farmers, we have often wondered about some of our animals over the years. Here's a photo of two male pigs we had a little more than a year ago. Let's just say, at minimum they were very "close." Another farmer gave them to us ... hmmmm, I wonder why.

And these two roosters showed no interest in hens and fought with all the chickens. They were eventually housed in their own coop, where they lived happily ever after.

I'm glad gay animals can find each other. At least they can have some little bit of happiness.

A very nice post John. It is always nice to see our gay animal counterparts represented. It nice to think that the two male pigs and the roosters found an accepting home. Other animals are not nearly so lucky.

Based on the reading, I definitely don't think it was grounds for any kind of severe action. You do have to be sensitive about sexual issues in school, but in this context I don't feel that any purpose was served at all by doing this to an educator.

What a bunch of rednecks. Now wonder the US is in a mess.

Good grief!! What is the matter with people. Their homophobia has apparently spilled over into the animal kingdom now. Is there no end to this? Grrrrr.....

I don't think this warranted such a harsh penalty. Egads!

I believe it will only get worse as the Conservative Religious Right attacks the public schools. With their political action groups and the money behind them, we will become a country of Charter (Private) and government funded Religious Schools

THANK YOU to everyone that left a comment. I am happy to report that the teacher is already back in class after a hearing. READ ALL ABOUT IT AT MY NOVEMBER 5th blog post.

@Larry Ohio, me too! I truly believe all animals have feelings.

@Kyle, Thanks! I love to know somebody thinks it was a very nice post. I have 2 female cats and 2 male cats in the house. Of course, they have all been "fixed" so it's hard to tell what the orientation is! Cats do the darndest things!

Looks like a lot of people agreed with you that this was no reason for such severe disciplinary action.

@Argentum Vulgaris, I won't say we don't have a bunch of rednecks around here, but in this case they were persuaded to reinstate the teacher.

@themom, some people are just dumb and take drastic action without thinking things through.

@Kwizgiver, I don't think it warranted such a harsh penalty either. Glad they reinstated him.

@Maria, thank you for commenting about this...I was hoping you would. You know more about these things than most people and what you said is a little scary to say the least.
