Houston voters elect first openly gay mayor

Houston Is Largest City to Elect Openly Gay Mayor - NYTimes.com


On Saturday night, Houston, the country's fourth largest city (AP) elected it's first openly gay mayor. City Controller, Annise Parker defeated Gene Locke, a former city attorney.

Houston is now among the list of other major cities, such as Portland, Oregon, Cambridge, Massachussettes, and Providence, Rhode, Island that have chosen openly gay mayors. Click the link for photos and full story.

@plainolebob, no doubt about that! She has 19 years experience in Houston's city government. She will do great!

Do you realize that not long ago, the story would have been that she is a woman!? *heh* We've come a long way, baby. :-)

@Jo, that is so true! We have come a long way. I hope to see more women in government, especially the presidency (but not Sarah Palin).

Amazing, when you consider the smead campaign against her (maybe that ended up back-firing. As you probably know, Portlan'ds mayor is till in some trouble, although he is my neighbor & has has my support. Happy Holidays from Portland!

@Stephen, yes it is amazing considering the deseperate smear campaign, and like you said--it back fired! One thing she did have going for her was her name recognition there.

Yes, I have read about or saw on tv the Portland Mayor scandal, but I thought it had all blown over (no pun intended)!
