How to Spot a Compulsive Liar

How to Spot a Compulsive Liar | eHow.com

From TruthAboutDeception.com...Here's some excerpts from this article:

Find out here if your husband or wife, boyfriend or girlfriend is a compulsive or pathological liar.

Not only do compulsive liars bend the truth about issues large and small, they take comfort in it. Lying feels right to a compulsive liar. Telling the truth, on the other hand, is difficult and uncomfortable.

And like any behavior which provides comfort and an escape from discomfort (i.e., alcohol, drugs, sex), lying can become addictive and hard to stop. For the compulsive liar, lying feels safe and this fuels the desire to lie even more.

Making matters even more complicated, compulsive lying is often a symptom of a much larger personality disorder, which only makes the problem more difficult to resolve (see,
narcissistic personality disorder and borderline personality disorder).

Unfortunately, compulsive lying is hard for the person involved to see, but it hurts those who are around it. Compulsive lying, if not addressed, can easily ruin a relationship (for example, see
why does he need to lie)

My oldest daughter's live-in...whatever he is...father to her child, is a pathological, compulsive liar. In fact, he was suspended from Medical School when he applied for his Residency program, and lied on the application. The stupid thing (on his part) was that it was unnecessary to lie, it wouldn't have made a difference one way or another how he filled in that blank. He did it just to build himself up. But when it was a lie, the red flags went up and bingo...he lost the already great Residency that he was offered, could not do anything for another year before he re-applied for his residency, and when he did re-apply, it was noted that he had been previously suspended and therefore got stuck working in a crappy hospital as opposed to one of the best in the country as he had before he lied.

Do you think this taught the guy a lesson? Nope...he's still a pathological liar, and for the life of me I have no idea why my daughter stays with him. Well...I do, he's controlling and outright dangerous in my view, but that's another story.

@Mary_Ellen, I just love it when you to my blog and comment. It's such a cop out for people to leave such a brief comment like "nice post." Well duh! To me, that means either they didn't read it or they don't understand it! Obviously, I lengthier comments.

Shame on me for laughing! I wasn't laughing at the duather's situation with the big liar, but laughing at your ability to tell it in such a humorous way!

And you said something so vitally important for people to know, and that is when a red flag goes up. It can't be ignored. It's like a gut feeling and you know it's a lie, even though there is no logical explanation for the person to lie!

I do feel the concern in your words about your daughter's safety and I feel it is warranted. Believe me, I know first hand that we can't tell our grown kids what to do... God knows I've tried with mine. They will just do what THEY want, and end up learning the hard way. Eventually people get tired of liars. At least I did.

Thanks for sharing that on topic personal story about a compulsive liar! I appreciate the comment!

My newly minted spouse and I moved to Europe in 1970 so the timing was right. I loved Queen passionately and still find them very exciting in my dotage.

Not too many talents stand the test of time. Most musicians I liked at 18 make me cringe now.

But.. but.. Freddie Mercury's death from AIDS was an absolute tragedy. Young death is always a tragedy, but he was alone in an attic, disfigured and covering up the true story until the last day. However I think telling the truth in Freddie's case would not have helped Queen.. and lying was perfectly understandable.

@Hels, I was a big Queen fan even as a young child. Its a shame so many people didn't realize how talented Freddie was was until after his death. It was a sad loss when he died, and there's never been anyone quite like him since.

What I hate about Lies is when you get tricked into believing one. The news is my biggest pet peeve, when they take something and twist it around than you blog about it finding out later it is a lie. Than you feel like a fool!

@Beth, the news can be pretty bad sometimes! Like right now there are conflicting stories about Debbie Rowe accepting 4 million dollars to let the Jackson's raise her kids. Yet, other news reports are saying that isn't true. So somebody is lying!

Of course, that's not really news though, is it? Well, it is entertainment news and a current event/pop culture, which is a topic I blog about.

But I am so over all this Michael Jackson coverage. I did a heartfelt tribute the day he died, and that's all I plan to do. I wish he could just rest in peace.
